For this demo the phone number is used as a stable customer identifier. This is a mock identity step.

Use the same phone number in both roles during the demo.
Technical step 1: the application resolves or creates a local customer record using the phone number. No Verifiable Credential is created yet. In a production setup this step would typically be handled by an external identity provider.
